The North Lakeshore area of Wisconsin features Lake Superior, the largest of
the Great Lakes. Attractions centered around water are widespread in this area,
including fishing, boat rides and more. Bayfield is one of the largest centers
in the area, with accommodations, restaurants, shops and more for visitors.
Bayfield is also home to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, a protected
park characterized by 21 small islands that are popular with kayakers and other
boaters. Nearby Ashland is home to an historical museum with a chronicle of
the area's past. The Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center is also located in
Ashland and provides a wealth of information related to the massive bodies of
water that straddle the U.S.-Canadian border. Ashland also hosts the annual
Big Granite In-line Marathon, which sees participants don rollerblades and in-line
skates to complete a 26-mile course.
